Do it like a local: Itamar Israeli

Itamar Israeli is the manager and co-owner of the vivacious Asian restaurant, Kab Kem. Itamar’s culinary spark ignited over 10 years ago when he was working at the restaurant Thai House. Itamar feels like hosting people and providing them with amazing food is a privilege, so his role at Kab Kem is a dream come true.

Itamar appreciates Tel Aviv because of the feeling of freedom mixed with the deep-rooted community. Wherever you go, you’re sure to know someone. Whether you want a cocktail or a coffee at the crack of dawn, Itamar loves that he can easily find both in the city. The combination of small town comfort and 24/7 availability is something Itamar knows he can only find in Tel Aviv.

  • Start the Day at Milk Bakery

Itamar loves starting his day early in Jaffa because there is so much liveliness and beauty. His first stop is always Milk Bakery for a delicious cup of coffee, and sometimes a little sweet treat. “[Milk Bakery] does the most amazing pastries, even though I’m not really a sweets person, I love everything there.”

  • Admiring Art & Design at SAGA Gallery

Although he works in the restaurant business, Itamar has a soft spot for art, and has even studied it. When he’s looking for some creative inspiration, SAGA Gallery is at the top of his list. “I love design and art, and it’s always inspiring to look at Israeli designers work. Plus, my wife, Neta Tesler, presents her brand – Knots Studio in the gallery.”

  • Shop at Shuk HaPishpeshim

Also known as the Jaffa Flea Market, this is the market where Itamar spends a lot of his time. The energy that the market gives off is like nowhere else in the world, and Itamar unfailingly finds whatever he’s looking for, and oftentimes, more. “I think Shuk HaPishpeshim is my favorite because there’s always some magic inside.”

  • Secret Dining at Margaret Tayar

Although this restaurant has been around for over 40 years, Margaret Tayar  is still one of Jaffa’s best hidden secrets. Itamar fell in love with the place not just because it’s 50m from the beach, but because of the feeling of love and hospitality that overwhelms the restaurant and seeps into the food. “Margaret makes everything on the spot, using wood and twigs and fairy dust, and who knows what, but the result is amazing every time.”

  • Drinks at Jasper Johns

Itamar spends a lot of time at Kab Kem, and even still, he loves grabbing a cocktail at the bar and enjoying the incredible environment. But, when he wants to go out outside of work, Jasper Johns is the place you’ll find him. “Jasper has an electric atmosphere, live DJ music, and bartenders who know how to shake a drink. What else do you need?”
